Beaglebone Project: Chicken Coop Cam

We have chickens.  We have a chicken coop.

My wife and daughter want a chicken coop camera.

One of my predecessors at MIT (Steve Golson) has already put together a hencam.  I will be trying to adapt some of the lessons learned from that endeavor to improve chicken coop cam.

Energy budget:

The power consumption of the Beaglebone is 2.5 W (maximum, .5 A * 5V).

The power consumption of the wifi is 1.5 W (.3 A * 5V).

The power consumption of the camera is 2.5 W (maximum based on usb spec).  It’s probable that this power consumption is more in the .5 W range (.1 A * 5 V).

Because the peripherals consume so much power, it is not a good idea to draw this power through the Beaglebone 5V connector.  It will not be able to source that much current.

A powered usb hub is the only way to go.  I had a Belkin (model F4U073).  I’m working on finding the connector specs.  Maybe 3.5mm x 1.0 mm.

With these power numbers, it’s going to take at least four solar panels (8 W for half a day).

A 2.5 Ah battery will supply 1 A for 2.5 hours.  To get through 12 hours at that  current, you would need 5 batteries.

So, it looks like switching to the 5.6 W solar panel is critical. A separate power supply for the Beaglebone and for the powered hub should give sufficient power for the project.

Rather than using the batteries specified above, I will probably switch to lithium-ion AA batteries, configured to work with the charger.  Or, this battery pack.

The Beaglebone has three usb ports.  For testing, I used a powered hub.  But, for implementation, I decided to use the two ports that have standard connectors … one for the wifi, the other for the web cam.

The Beaglebone comes with a cable for the mini-USB port; however, in order to connect a male usb A to the cable, you need a female to female usb A adapter.  These are available at many retail stores (Staples, Walmart, …) and they’re available on-line (amazon, mouser, …).  Adafruit sells DIY shells, so you can assemble a cable using the appropriate mini-usb male and usb A female shell.  Beaglebone uses usb 2.0.


Camera set up

The webcam needs to video 4 linux package and the motion application in order to work.

Hencam uses ffmpeg, so I thought I’d try that.  For debian jessie, ffmpeg has been replace by libav-tools. So,

apt-get install libav-tools

With the webcam installed, you should be able to find its video device:

ls /dev/video*

or

v4l2-ctl –list-devices

If you have only one installed, it should be /dev/video0.  If this is not present, try lsusb to see if the device was detected and its driver installed.  If not, you will need to surf Mr. Internet to find out what’s going on with your video camera.  It may involve installing a driver.

To determine what your video camera can do:

v4l2-ctl –list-formats-ext

For the camera’s video modes:

avconv -f video4linux2 -list_formats all -i /dev/video0

A list of available video drivers can be gained by:

avconv -codecs

A list of pix-fmts can be gained by

avconv -pix_fmts

You can also get a list of video capture formats from

v4l2-ctl –list-formats

The command

v4l2-ctl –all

gives a list of all the webcam’s capabilities and defaults.


Once avconv is installed and the device set up, you can poll the device for its audio support with

arecord -l

Look for the CARD and DEV fields.

For sound, I have tried:

avconv -f alsa -i plughw:CARD=C930e,DEV=0 test.wav

and gotten a result.


Here is where I am on getting a video/audio stream to file:

avconv -f video4linux2 -r 25 -i /dev/video0 -f alsa -i plughw:C930e,0 -ar 22050 -ab 64k -strict experimental -acodec aac -vcodec mpeg4 -y webcam.mp4

I don’t have audio yet and the video seems to be starting late and ending soon.

I’m still getting audio/video parameters correct.  But, the -f flv and rtmp stuff seem to be common to sending stuff to youtube.
